Summer Reading 2016

This summer, the entire PRHS school community (incoming grades 7-12) will participate in a unique reading program, One Book One School

A community that reads together grows together. Having a shared experience through summer reading will allow us to engage in the book across subject areas and throughout the school year. Students, teachers, administrators, support staff, and parents will read the same book. Then, beginning in September 2016, various lessons and activities related to our summer reading will be featured in English, as well as Social Studies, Science, Math, World Language, Business, Computers, Art, Music and PE classes.

Our summer reading book will be the memoir Of Beetles and Angels: A Boy's Remarkable Journey from a Refugee Camp to Harvard by Mawi Asgedom.  This is a powerful story of personal struggle and success that provides readers with insight into the essential question: Do the circumstances that we are born into always determine our fate?

To assist them with  their reading comprehension, students are encouraged to take notes and use post-its while they read. For the first week of school students must complete at least ONE graphic organizer (see the links below). In addition, a pronunciation/vocabularly guide and interactive map can be accessed by clicking the links.

Digital copy of the memoir and audiobook can be "borrowed" through BELS using student ID/public library card.
The digital audio is now accessible. It is as simple as accessing the library catalog, signing in and searching for the book.
